The relationship between a pet parent and their pet is uniquely theirs to cherish. These relationships are profoundly deep.

It is important that all involved family members sit down face-to-face and take time to discuss their preferences. Here is a short list of questions that you, and any other lovers of your pet, should discuss so that you tailor the process to make it feel as intimately personalized as possible:

  • Who do you want to have present for the euthanasia? Anyone with a strong emotional bond with the dog should try to be present.
  • Do you want an indoor or outdoor euthanasia? Choose a place where your pet will be the most comfortable
  • What exact spot on your property do you want the euthanasia to be done?
  • Is there any type of music that you feel should be played during the euthanasia?
  • Is there anything you want to prepare to say during this process? Is there a favorite passage or prayer you want to say out loud or to yourself?
  • Are there any other atmospheric conditions that would help make the euthanasia feel as sacred as possible? Some people prefer to light candles or light incense, etc.
  • Are there any sacred symbols of the relationship you have with your pet? Some owners choose to have a special toy, blanket or picture nearby as the euthanasia is occurring.

The beauty of at home euthanasia is it allows you to totally customize the atmosphere to you and your pet’s most cherished preferences. Remember, there is no right way to say goodbye. However, what you don’t want to do is make decisions about how you want the process to be without including others who have deep and meaningful relationships with your pet. It can cause hard feelings, and I know you want to avoid this. It is important that you do not do things that you will later on regret.
