Dr. Maria vs. Franchise Vets

It is critical you understand what is going on behind-the-scenes in veterinary healthcare, especially with the in-home euthanasia service you may be considering paying for.

During the 30 years that I have been practicing, I have watched the field of veterinary medicine change dramatically. One factor that has dramatically increased the prices charged by veterinarians is the entry of large franchising corporations. These corporations have become widespread and are simultaneously often charging higher prices than locally owned professionals like myself. You can see for yourself by doing your own research. It is important for you to be educated about the fact that previously, veterinary medicine was almost solely comprised of local, independent small business owners.

I have founded and successfully run two different housecall veterinary practices. One in Tampa, FL and now one here in Tucson, AZ. Overall, I have over 30 years of veterinary business experience. I certainly believe in healthy competition, and I also understand that sometimes franchises can bring fresh ideas which improve a certain market sector of the business world. Moreover, veterinarians working for corporations can certainly do quality work.

At the same time, I am deeply concerned by what has become a dramatic raising of prices that is making clients feel painfully financially pinched. I believe that prices have become unrealistic. This puts you, the pet owner, into a very uncomfortable position.

More specifically, one major focus of these corporate franchises has been the at home euthanasia market. Because these corporate franchises are now increasing their market share, they have the power to charge higher prices because they have become so visible. However, very often corporate based pricing is significantly higher because part of the cost goes to the corporation, versus simply going into the pocket of the local veterinarian. In contrast, as a local owner of an at home euthanasia private practice, I am able to charge much less. Simultaneously, I am able to maintain the highest level of quality of care. My 5.0 google review status speaks for itself.

"I can’t begin to say enough nice things about Dr. Miller, her demeanor and her professionalism. My beloved cat Van was in the final stages of debilitating malignant thyroid tumors that left him unable to eat and drink in his final days. Dr. Miller’s service of coming to the house to help Van peacefully pass was a relief. Dr. Miller’s comforting actions with Van and her reassurances to me helped make what was already a horrific experience as bearable as possible under the circumstances."
